UPMC's Sleep
Medicine Center — an accredited sleep medicine center by the
American
Academy of Sleep Medicine — is the only multidisciplinary
sleep medicine facility in western Pennsylvania.
The Sleep Medicine
Center performs approximately 2,000 sleep studies annually for adult
patients with all types of sleep disorders. The staff at the UPMC
Sleep Medicine Center include board certified physicians, certified
nurse practitioners, and registered sleep laboratory technologists.
During
your first visit to the UPMC Sleep Medicine Center, a sleep medicine
clinician will take a comprehensive sleep history and perform a
physical examination. If you have a bed partner who has witnessed
you stop breathing, can verify loud snoring, or has observed other
behaviors during your sleep, he or she is welcome to attend this
visit with you. At the end of this visit, the doctor will determine
if a sleep
study is needed to further evaluate your sleep. Our staff will
schedule you for a sleep study and other diagnostic studies, if
necessary.
When your sleep
study is completed, you should schedule a return clinic visit in
4 to 8 weeks to review your study results. If you are prescribed
therapy
for sleep
apnea such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)
or bilevel positive airway pressure ventilation
(BPAP) therapy, please bring your equipment to the clinic
so it can be checked by our technicians. As with many medical conditions,
regular follow-up with your physician is important for you to achieve
the best results from therapy.

Our
Staff
All of the doctors
at the center are faculty members of the University
of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Division
of Pulmonary Medicine. They strive to advance pulmonary sleep
medicine treatments by taking an active part in pulmonary sleep
medicine education and research.
In addition to providing sleep medicine education to health care
professionals, they offer post-graduate and public education on
sleep and sleep disorders.
As part of the
center's commitment to education, medical students and resident
physicians who receive training in pulmonary sleep medicine, may
assist your doctor with your care.
Our doctors:
Nurse practitioners
provide care to patients in collaboration with our doctors. They
are highly trained in pulmonary sleep medicine and can review your
sleep studies, provide strategies in helping use your equipment,
and closely monitor your response to therapy in subsequent clinic
visits.
Our nurse practitioner:
Sleep technicians
are specially trained in conducting and interpreting sleep studies.
Many of the sleep technicians in our lab are also respiratory therapists.
They are highly knowledgeable about continuous
positive airway pressure (CPAP) and bilevel positive airway pressure
ventilation (BPAP) devices and the many different masks/interfaces
available. They will be closely monitoring your sleep and breathing
patterns during your sleep study in our laboratory.
